It’s time to overcome caution and start fighting the election battle in earnest

Joe Biden strikes most people as a respectable guy. That reality alone could go a long way towards get him elected US president in November. Avuncular, good-hearted, reassuring, empathic are adjectives frequently applied to his low-key, low-visibility candidacy. This image opposes starkly with public perceptions of rowdy, indelicate Donald Trump. Not being Trump may suffice for countless voters.

Yet Biden, onetime vice-president to Barack Obama, would be unwise to pin all his hopes on the “character issue”. After winning the Democratic nomination, Biden talked about “restoring America’s soul”. Hovering above the conflict, he is necessary to imparting people together and point America’s polarisation. All well and good. But he is going to have to get down and unclean soon.
