Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 officially lands a brand-new directing trio. Sony Pictures Animation delivered one of the most difficult surprises of its first year in 2018 with the liberation of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Written and produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the animated movie leant the Miles Morales version of Spider-Man at the center of a multiverse driven story. The film was a huge success, making $375 million worldwide at the box office and earning an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

The end of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse left the door open for Miles’ story to continue and Sony officially announced plans for a sequel before much of the film’s success was achieved. It recruited increase with Lord and Miller returning to work on the movie creatively, but they once again planned to pass off directing roles to others, despite their years of experience helming inspired cinemas. The original movie was directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman, but it was previously revealed they wouldn’t return to direct Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2. Now, we finally know who is leading the charge.

According to Variety, Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson are the trio who will direct Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2. Santos’ involvement was previously reported, but now the designer officially has some promotion. His previous approvals include working on Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra, and Justice League Unlimited. Powers is fresh off co-directing and writing Pixar’s Soul, as well as Regina King’s One Night in Miami. Thompson has a history with the Spider-Verse franchise previously, as he was a production designer on the original film.
