Unlike various scoundrels, Batwoman season 2 seemingly taunted that the Arrowverse’s version of Penguin has remained very much functional within Gotham City. Since debuting in the 2018 “Elseworlds” crossover event, the character of Batwoman( then Ruby Rose ) facilitated comments to the wider Bat-lore. Throughout Batwoman season 1, they strayed from mentions to visual Easter eggs to aim illusions. Though the Batwoman mantle legislated to Javicia Leslie’s Ryan Wilder for season 2, that blueprint continued throughout the sophomore outing.
In Batwoman season 2, episode 13, “I’ll Give You A Clue, ” they came extremely thick and fast. The installment celebrated the flee of Arthur Brown, a.k.a. Cluemaster( Rick Miller ), from Blackgate Prison. With a rancour against Sophie Moore( Meagan Tandy ), he agreed a series of dangerous puzzles for her to solve or die trying. Taking Ryan and Mary Hamilton( Nicole Kang) along for the move, the quest led to the introduction of Stephanie Brown( Morgan Kohan) to the Arrowverse. It likewise participated the trio become embroiled in a changed gameshow.

Hosted by Cluemaster, the sinister contest insured them have to answer trivia questions or meet an explosive aim. Centered on the theme of “Gotham Villainy, ” each round offered an display of remarks to Batman’s( and Batwoman’s) extended swindlers gallery. As the clock ticked down, one of the final questions was about a “frosty foe” that had given “the Dark Knight a run for his money.” Though Sophie demanded the answer was Mr. Freeze, Ryan deduced it was referring to The Penguin. She then went on to offer her infer: “The Penguin owns Iceberg Lounge, which has a backroom casino, ” Ryan said, to questionable reactions from Sophie and Mary. “What? Angelique used to work there.” On the surface, that may have not seemed like much more than a merriment nod. Nonetheless, unlike when Mr. Freeze was confirmed, Penguin was talked about in the present tense — suggesting both he and his dominion are alive and well.
This wasn’t Batwoman’s first reference to Penguin. Oswald Cobblepot was previously viewed on a cadre door back in Arkham Asylum. Similarly, it was mentioned via Vesper Fairchild( Rachel Maddow) that he’d once been mayor of Gotham. In Batwoman season 2, his top hat and monocle were seen at an auction of villainous memorabilla. The recent sign will no doubt have proved the most exciting, however. After all, it confirmed that he was no longer decomposing apart in Arkham alongside such other conspicuous rascals as Tommy Elliot a.k.a. Hush( Gabriel Mann ). Equally, he had not met a fated terminate like some others — such as Circe Sionis, the late daughter of Black Mask( Peter Outerbridge ).
Of course, he could have still owned the Iceberg Lounge from Arkham. Given the general state of Gotham City, however, there’d be no way his team and area wouldn’t have been wrested in his absense. As such, it would appear that in the years since he escaped – or potentially had his journey altered by Crisis on Infinite Earths – he’d restored his empire. And, equally, in those times, it had once again prospered. The detail that neither Batwoman has clashed with him likely aims he’s been biding under the radar – for now.
Still, the move could be a solid set-up for him to appear down the line, maybe even as early as the previously proven Batwoman season 3. Should the evidence move forward on such a razz, it could open some interesting streets, even on a throw elevation. The most likely option would be that Batwoman would assign the persona anew from Robin Lord Taylor’s iteration on Gotham. As demonstrated by Wallis Day taking over as Kate Kane or Brandon Routh in the Crisis on Infinite Earths event, the Arrowverse isn’t above crossing creeks with other DC TV depicts or having actors reprise their characters from other supports, however. As such, there’s always an outside potential that they could broaden the multiversal overlap by having Taylor return. Whether or not anything at all viewing Penguin comes to fruition, nonetheless, Batwoman followers will have to wait and see.
