Warning! Spoilers for Tales from the Dark Multiverse: Crisis on Infinite Earths# 1 below.
As a collective squad, there are few devils the Justice League can’t take down when working together. But, across DC’s Multiverse, a villain from the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Thor: Ragnarok, just proved they are stronger than the team – so much so, several Justice League heroes were killed in an attempt to stop them.
The Thor villain Surtur is based on Surtr, from Norse mythology, where the fiery giant seeks to cause Ragnarok, which is the death of the gods. The reputation is most known in the comics as a Marvel villain, but in a recent controversy that shows what happens if the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths were reversed, and instead of the Justice Society of America falling in battle, the Justice League were killed instead – at the paws of Surtur.

In Tales from the Dark Multiverse: Crisis on Infinite Earths by Steve Orlando, Mike Perkins, Andy Troy, and ALW’s Troy Peteri, the comic opens with what would have happened in the JSA were left locked in a fight against Surtur following the death of the Justice League. The issue opens with Surtur’s fiery destruction of full exhibition, as the superstars from Earth-1 such as Batman, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter and Aquaman are shown to be killed in battle.
The page establishes just how powerful Surtur is. He managed to take down the Justice League’s best team with relative informality. The new Earth is set ablaze by Surtur’s quest for Ragnarok and even when the Star Squadron( composed of the Earth’s mightiest heroes) attempt to take him down, they are easily completed as he kills a number of potent protagonists including Hawkman, Doctor Fate, and the Spectre. Surtur would have destroyed the entire Earth if it wasn’t for Alan Scott’s Green Lantern making a deal with the demon that he would assist him find planets to destroy if he gave his own – effectively fixing him DC’s version of Silver Surfer.
If Scott hadn’t stirred the deal with Surtur, there’s little doubt he would have enveloped the part Earth in volley and killed the remaining DC heroes. He has turned out to be unbeatable – which was evident by his takedown of the Justice League. Scott’s sacrifice comes at a massive payment, but in the end, he avoided the rest of the JSA( and Earth’s dwellers) from certain demise. Clearly, the planet’s best heroes were no match for the mighty Surtur.
