The Many Saints of Newark entries in theaters and on HBO Max on Oct. 1. Review by Laura Sirikul.

The Many Saints of Newark gets the Italian mafia drama right with Dickie Moltisanti’s narrative at the vanguard, led by a awesome performance by Alessandro Nivola. It’s at its best when it has its iconic characters going through personal and professional issues, asking their moral compasses. It’s only when The Sopranos creator David Chase and co-writer Lawrence Konner try to add too much to the Sopranos Universe within two hours, with brand-new attributes and brand-new sticky situations, that the film begins to falter. Still, it has many of the ingredients of what induced the original huge, and should leave nostalgic supporters satisfied.
