The Exorcist reboot trilogy’s first film has an October 2023 release date. The 1973 original film that goes by the same name went on to win two Oscars, making it one of the only horror films to achieve such prestigious awards. The story is based on William Peter Blatty’s 1971 book. William Friedkin (The French Connection) directed from a screenplay written by Blatty himself. The plot tells the story of a young girl (Linda Blair) after she’s possessed by a powerful entity. Her mother (Ellen Burstyn) enlists the help of two priests to save her.

It was previously reported that Universal Pictures and Peacock acquired the rights to make a new trilogy based on the property for a total of around $400 million. The story supposedly follows the original film as a sequel, rather than being set based on the existing sequels that the movie inspired. Burstyn will reprise her role alongside newcomer Leslie Odom Jr. (Hamilton). While David Gordon Green (Halloween Kills) will be directing, there are few details released on the film being produced by Blumhouse Productions.

In an official press release by Universal Pictures, it has been announced that the first installment of the new Exorcist trilogy will receive a wide theatrical release on October 13, 2023. There are no release dates announced yet for the following two sequels in the trilogy. The film is set to be released in theaters, although no distribution platform plan has been announced for its sequels.

While more details about the new Exorcist trilogy are slowly being released, there’s still a lot that audiences don’t yet know. Despite the fact that Burstyn is returning to her role, Blair has stated that she hasn’t been included in any discussions around these films as of yet. Perhaps the new film will follow Green’s Halloween trilogy, which announced information on its two sequels simultaneously after the first installment was released. Given that Universal Pictures and Peacock shelled out $400 million to make this trilogy, it’s clear that they have faith in the trilogy performing well.

With a release date of October 13, 2023 set, audiences will have to be patient to see what the franchise has in store for the series with this reboot. It’s still a bit too early to analyze the direction that the new trilogy is going in, given the few details that have been provided thus far. However, Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions are aiming to tackle the Halloween market with its October release. If it follows suit with Halloween, it’s likely that the following sequels will also receive October release dates. Stay tuned for more information on The Exorcist and its upcoming trilogy.
