I wasn’t sure I was ready for Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 Episode 1.

After all, the first season was fitted with ginormous highs and cataclysmic lows.

Burnham Vertical - Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 Episode 1

There was enormous goal built into this newest franchise member. They travelled light. They sagged swear words. They played an unbelievably long arc narrative. It was Moore’s Battlestar Galactica for Roddenberry’s base.

But, gaily, by any measure of a narrative, this was a solid season premiere.

New references introduced in interesting ways. Check.

New assignment set up with a good dosage of mystery and possible accident. Check.

Away Team - Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 Episode 1

Some certainly elegant special effects and war stages. Check.

Oh, and yay to killing off the moron who can’t get along with( or even be halfway respectful of) Burnham. Double check.

Burnham: We’ll set up pattern enhancers and light back.Connelly: Unless our signals get caught up in everything that ion twisting and we rematerialize in a billion piecesPike: You want out, Connelly , now is the time.Connelly: Not a chance, sir. I desire roller coasters.

We don’t need this kind of negativity hanging around. That’s what we have Stamets for.

And the rest of our core crew is back.

Vertical Saru and Burnham - Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 Episode 1

Granted, Saru exclusively gets his mastery for about ten percent of the action.

Tilly remains delightfully awkward. Or awkwardly fascinating. Either nature, she’s ever better in smaller doses.

Stamets: I need you to repeat after me.Tilly: OkayStamets: I will say…Tilly: I will sayStamets: … fewer things.Tilly: Fewer th … okay.

The Spock-factor was so of underwhelming. Well, until the end where it actually subjects.

I’ve always like Sarek’s situations with Burnham. Even if he isn’t her biological father, there’s a better quality to their discussions that feels like a real discourse between family and, even more importantly, they figure stuff out. It’s exposition that’s concerning. Disappear figure.

Pike Vertical - Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 Episode 1

Although Pike runs out of his highway to state that “hes not” Lorca, there is still a specter that hangs over the role played by captain when it comes to the U.S.S. Discovery. It’ll take some time to really experience him as a part of this gang and even more to investigated him extending it.

I pondered the connect roll call was a nice touch. Learning people’s refers travels a long way to gaining their confidence. Not sure I’m a fan of “Hit it” as his catch-phrase but we’ll see.

Engineers at Work - Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 Episode 1

It was heartening to learn Culber even if he was a hologram. I appreciate the respect being testified to Stamets’ grief. Despite the real-time hiatus, there has been very little time since Culber’s murder. And the fact his gunman basically walked away.

Given what he’s been through, Stamets can be forgiven for trying the duck and clothe( or in this case duck and run away to Vulcan) method for distributing.

Did you know that a Kasseelian opera singer qualifies her whole life for one performance? And after she thumps that last high E, she lurches a knife into her own chest and dies. She’s lived an part lifetime in that last tone. And I’ve lived an entire lifetime in what I’ve reached here on Discovery.

Nonetheless, it was good to see him get excited about catching asteroids.

My favorite newcomers is readily Tig Notaro’s Jett Reno. Warning bells are disappearing off in my thought that she’s a moral quandary away from super-villain status but* holy turd* is she awesome.

I merely watch her credited with the one chapter but I’ve got my paws crossed for a return. I entail, they introduced Mudd back, didn’t they and Reno is far more useful. And funnier.

Relax, Tellurite blood is rich in hemerythra. The only place on Earth you’ll find anything like “its by” naval invertebrates. Evolution’s a fickle bitch, am I right?

Plus she mostly improved the equivalent of a running BB-8 with profusion option.

Quibbles I have( there are still frankly aren’t numerous) would be that the episode FELT long. Yes, it raced long.

Such is the pleasure of streaming cable canals that you are able to acquire your incidents as long or suddenly as you require but there really should be a good reason for tacking an extra twenty minutes on.

Pike Meets The Discovery - Star Trek: Discovery

In this case, it seems like the reason was they had some really fantastic footage of the launch husks hastening through the asteroid debris arena. It was undeniably terrific footage but there was a LOT of it.

And, except for the shot of Connelly get consumed by that babe asteroid( which I could probably watch as a looping GIF for DAYS ), most of the footage was bonus line material.

Reno: We’ve been rockin’ and rollin’ for hours. Can person tell me what’s going on? Burnham: This asteroid is on a collision course with a pulsar. The gravitational plain is going to tear this sit apart.Reno: Huh. What a relief. Thought we were all going to die. Can you get us the hell out of here or what?

So, the last thing that needs addressing is the riddle abounds. Equated to the Klingon beacon, this seems pretty small potatoes.

I feel like, although the explodes give them guidance( to be determined since they only moved the responsibilities of the one they discovered Reno on) the season is going to look at the Enterprise’s crew and the discomfort that Pike described due to having sat out the war.

Pike and Burnham - Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 Episode 1

Of direction, the fact that Spock is somehow relating to the blasts prepares them far more … er, mesmerizing. The sought for the outbursts is very likely to parallel Burnham’s reunion with her promote brother and the reveal of whatever force them apart.

So, more kinfolk angst on the horizon. Ooookay.

Overall, there are a lot more punchlines moving around here than I was used to from last season and I judge Pike speaks immediately to that in his final background, obligating a lighter, more enjoyable season to witness in a way.

Wherever our goal makes us, we’ll try to have a little enjoyable along the way too, alright? Make a little sound. Ruffle a few cases feathers.

Personally, my favorite lol-moment was stock exchanges about the uniforms. After a season of very little variance from the navy Discovery jumpsuits, the Pike crew’s half-a-step-to-Shatner colours were blinding.

Nhan: I determine where the Federation frames its pennies.Pike: Do not begrudge thy neighbor’s starship, Commander. Besides, we got the new uniforms.Saru: And lovely uniforms the objective is, Captain.Burnham: Exceedingly colorful.

And then the capper was the dress the away squad donned for the launch husks. Who else conceived “GO! GO! POWER Commando! ” when they accompanied onto the launch pad deck? Be honest.

It’s worth watching Star Trek: Discovery online for the Power Rangers-esque jumpsuits alone but, in all seriousness, this was a cinematically-shot, primarily well-paced premiere.

What are your initial expectations on the premiere?

Did it fulfill expectations? Blow your thinker? Confuse, motivate, or rile?
